The decade of restoration
The launch of Caledonian Climate coincides with the inception of the United Nations ‘Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030)’ and we at Caledonian Climate are passionate to contribute towards reviving our damaged ecosystems today, tomorrow and long into the future.
“There has never been a more urgent need to revive damaged ecosystems than now.”
Within Scotland, 80% of the peatland is degraded and it covers over 20% of our wonderful country. In fact, the flow country alone accounts for over 5% of the worlds blanket bog cover. What an extraordinary resource… right on our doorstep. But collectively, we need to do more.
The Scottish government are on board and have committed to investing £250m over ten years in peatland restoration; but this is only going to go so far. With a target of restoring 250,000 hectares of degraded peatland by 2030, everyone is going to have to join in and work together to meet this challenging target.
We at Caledonian Climate believe that by bringing landholders and businesses together, we have the skills and knowledge to rapidly expand and accelerate the restoration works that are taking place today, helping to reverse the negative trends and achieve the essential restoration goals that have been set.
In doing so, we will help to achieve the global ambitions of combatting climate change and halting biodiversity loss. Without flourishing peatland ecosystems , flora and fauna native to this country could cease to exist. Habitats will be lost. local rural communities will be impacted. If we do however, harness the global ambitions and focus our minds on the task at hand, we can achieve the opposite.
- Biodiversity at restored sites will thrive
- Water tables will rise and the risk of flooding will be reduced
- Water quality will improve
- Local and sustainable green jobs will be created
- Landscapes will be transformed
- Carbon will be sequestrated
So together, let’s join the #GenerationRestoration and restore the incredible peatlands of Scotland to their former glory!
“It will only succeed if everyone plays a part.”

About Caledonian Climate
Working responsibly with the custodians of Scotland’s beautiful countryside, Caledonian Climate is committed to tackling the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss.
To achieve this, we talk to forward-thinking businesses who want to fulfil their ambitions for carbon emission reductions through high-quality carbon credits with multiple co-benefits. We then partner them with landholders in the Scottish Highlands, maximising the ecological value and sustainability of their estates.
Building on our significant experience, and guided by a distinguished Advisory Board, Caledonian Climate is delivering the benchmark for long-term restoration of Scotland's degraded peatlands, locking away the carbon for good.
Our work also enhances biodiversity, improves water quality, boosts local economies and creates a compelling story for all of our partners to share.
